SPARKS AT DILLER S

SOME guests had "issues" with others at the high-powered lunch Barry Diller and Diane von Furstenberg threw the day before the Oscars in honor of Vanity Fair editor-in- chief Graydon Carter. Emmanuelle Seignier, the beautiful French wife of director Roman Polanski, wasn’t aware that Carter was the guest of honor and was taken aback to find herself face to face with the man her husband had successfully sued for libel. Top entertainment lawyer Bert Fields executed a graceful about- face when he found himself next to Garry Shandling on the buffet line. Fields represented Brad Grey in the lawsuit Shandling brought against his ex- manager, and it’s possible Shandling’s phone lines were tapped by jailed private eye Anthony Pellicano, who worked for Fields. Also, journalist John Connolly, who is covering the Pellicano case for his book "The Sin Eater," was on hand monitoring the near- misses. But everyone was on his best behavior as they picnicked on Diller’s exquisite Coldwater Canyon lawn. Present were media moguls Sumner and Paula Redstone, David Geffen, Rupert and Wendi Murdoch and Michael Eisner plus Barbara Walters, Liz Smith, Diana Ross, Steve Martin, Larry Gagosian, War ren Beatty, Shirley MacLaine, Jeffrey Katzenberg and Patrick Demarchelier, a diehard Knick fan bitter about the mismanaged team’s pathetic collapse.
