(AP) Nobel laureate Nadine Gordimer, Salman Rushdie and Steve Martin will be among the many writers and performers featured at the third annual PEN World Voices festival, to be held April 24-29 in settings throughout New York City.

The theme will be "Home and Away," according to PEN, the international writers organization, which announced the festival Wednesday.

"In the United States, the charged question of who can call America home has ignited a national debate on immigration," festival director Caro Llewellyn said in a statement. "We wanted to open up the discussion to include broader questions about what makes a home, and how we define ourselves in relation to it."

Others expected at the festival include authors Don DeLillo, Jonathan Franzen, Dave Eggers, Marilynne Robinson, Neil Gaiman, playwright Sam Shepard, musician Patti Smith and actor-film director Sydney Pollack.

Events will include a reading at Town Hall featuring DeLillo, Martin, Rushdie and Gordimer; a "PEN Cabaret" at the Bowery Ballroom, with Shepard and Patti Smith among those on the bill; and the "Arthur Miller Freedom to Write Lecture," given at Cooper Union by Israeli novelist David Grossman.
