The Tahari Comedy Hour
Roasting Steve Martin with Friends In Deed
Tuesday, June 12, 2007

(NEW YORK) Elie and Rory Tahari opened their SoHo home Monday for a cocktail party honoring Steve Martin and benefiting Friends In Deed, a charity that supports those inflicted with life-threatening diseases. One thing: Martin’s accolade was a spoof. “It turns out Steve, of considerable means, had never made a charitable contribution to anything in his life, or picked up a check for that matter,” roasted his friend, and Friends In Deed co-founder, Mike Nichols. “I told him, ‘If you appear, I would see that you get an award. As a result, the Friends In deed Ad Hoc Humanitarian Award, being inaugurated tonight, is being given to given to someone who can draw at least 50 people and whose presence hasn’t already been used up.”

Among the lucky guests on hand for the impromptu comedy act were Terry and Tina Lundgren, Jim Gold, André Balazs, Amanda Ross, and a fashionably late Jeremy Piven. “This, I think, will go in my refrigerator tonight,” the comedian retorted as he was handed his award—a Coke bottle covered in tin foil. “I won an Emmy in 1967 for The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour, and then now I won this,” he added. “Of course this award is more special to me—because it’s more recent.” As Martin was introduced to guests, many of whom included fashion industry insiders he didn’t immediately recognize, one complimented him on his suit. “John Varvatos,” he said, peeling back his suit jacket to show the label. “He’s a CFDA member,” piped Steven Kolb.
