The Alphabet is Going Steve in October

Here is some more info about Steve's next book.

The Alphabet from A to Y With Bonus Letter Z!

Written by Steve Martin and Roz Chast
Juvenile Fiction | Flying Dolphin Press | Hardcover | October 2007 | $17.95 | 978-0-385-51662-4 (0-385-51662-2)

About this Book

The acclaimed entertainer and bestselling author Steve Martin and the wildly clever New Yorker cartoonist Roz Chast team up in a weird, wonderful excursion through the alphabet.

The ABCs have never had it so good. Created by two of today’s wittiest, most imaginative minds, The Alphabet from A to Y with Bonus Letter Z! is a sheer delight from A to Z. In twenty-six alliterative couplets, Steve Martin conjures up much more than mere apples and zebras. Instead we meet Horace the hare, whose hairdo hides hunchbacks, and Ollie the owl, who owed Owen an oboe. Roz Chast contributes the perfect visual settings for Martin’s zany two-liners. Her instantly recognizable drawings are packed with humorous touches both broad and subtle.

Each rereading—and there will be many—delivers new delights and discoveries. There, hidden behind Bad Baby Bubbleducks, is a framed picture of a beatnik holding balloons; and the letter C finds clunky Clarissa all clingy and clueless adrift in a landscape cluttered with images ranging from a curiously comfortable clown to Chuck’s Chili stand. A smart, laugh-inducing introduction to the alphabet for young children, The Alphabet from A to Y with Bonus Letter Z! will also enchant adults with its matchless mix of the sophisticated and the silly.

Steve Martin in Upcoming Movie, Mama Baby?

Is this true? It's the first I've heard of it and Steve is not mentioned in the cast on imdb.com. Perhaps it's a cameo. Wait and see.

Tina Fey is a ‘Baby Mama’
Thu, 21 June 2007 at 8:17 pm

Former Saturday Night Live funnywoman Tina Fey gets in some bonding time with 21-month old daughter Alice on the NYC set of Baby Mama on Thursday. Hubby Jeff Richmond, who is an SNL composer, also joined in on the fun.

Baby Mama tells the story of single professional woman Kate (Fey), who opts to hire a surrogate mother (Amy Poehler, pictured below) so she can have a baby and keep her career on track. Tina’s baby is actually in the background in some of the scenes.

The film also co-stars Steve Martin, Sigourney Weaver, Greg Kinnear and Dax Shepard. Baby Mama is set for a 2008 release.

Steve speaks out on the recent publicity over parental abuse

The last post here mentioned that the article was all over the web about Steve's new book and an allegation of abuse by his father. I posted it because I post everything that might have some archival worth that comes out in the press or online about Steve. But, at the same time, it felt wrong to me. It's not that I doubted the fact that the information appeared in his upcoming book -- that would be too easy to verify -- but it didn't sound like something that Steve would have put out for publicity or to make a big deal of.

Now Steve has responded on his own website in the Random Messages from Steve section as follows:

Regarding abuse
There has been some publicity about my “confession” of abuse in my upcoming book, “Born Standing Up.” Out of over 200 pages, this passage is one paragraph, and it is followed by disclaimer that this type of incident never happened again and was not the pattern of my father. I cited it in the book only because my reaction to the event was relevant to the story of my stand-up. Of course the media wants another story, one that makes the book sound like a common celebrity abuse confessional, which it is not. The words “abuse” and “severely beaten” were not mine, but the additions of others who choose to jazz up the passage for their own purposes.

I have read just about everything that has been in the press and books on Steve for years. I've probably read more of it than Steve has. If you really want to know his attitude to his Dad, go read his own words about their relationship.

Steve beaten by his father as a child

This article has been all over the internet in this word for word form. I don't know where it started, possibly PageSix at the New York Post, but it has the earmarks of a publicity release.

And just in time for Father's Day.

Steve Martin was once severely beaten by his father as a child.

The comedic actor reveals in his upcoming memoir, 'Born Standing Up', that his dad brutally struck him with a belt when he was just nine years old leading to a 30-year rift.

In the book, Martin describes how he was eating dinner in front of the TV when "my father muttered something to me, and I responded with a mumbled, 'What?'

"He shouted, 'You heard me,' thundered up from his chair, pulled his belt out of its loops, and inflicted a beating that never seemed to end.

"The next day I was covered in welts and wore long pants and sleeves to hide them at school.

"But I swore with icy determination, that only the most formal relationship would exist between my father and me, and for perhaps 30 years, neither he nor I did anything to repair the rift."

The tell-all book, due to be published in December by Scribner, also contains amusing anecdotes from the 'Roxanne' star's life.

Martin reveals he once met Elvis Presley at a Las Vegas show where Martin was opening for singer-and-actress Ann-Margret.

Elvis then took the comic aside and told him, "Son, you have an ob-leek sense of humour."

Martin was then shown a pair of pistols and a derringer Elvis was carrying.

Goodbye to the Compleat Steve

First the bad news. For financial reasons, I cannot keep the main site up any longer. I do not know the exact end date, but the end is coming soon.

The good news, however, is that the blog will continue to provide the latest news.

While the main site is down, I might rework it in the hopes of reposting at a later date. I've enjoyed sharing my Steve collection.

Interesting new Steve stuff on youtube

Steve did an interview in 1997 with the BBC for a show called Scene by Scene in which he talks about his movies to date. You can see the first of seven segments on youtube here. I won't do the rest of the links -- you will find them all at the one above.

Also, there is a really obscure clip from a Johnny Cash Christmas special where Steve sings with Cash and Kris Kristofferson -- here.

And finally, a couple of Johnny Carson sketches. The first is his comedy act for dogs, done sometime in the 70s. The second is a long segment from a Carson special -- a magic act, singing "Climb every mountain", and a really old card trick.

Enjoy.
